SOMBA (French acronym for Observation System at Sea of the Algerian Basin)

The objective of the project is to set up a marine observation system in the Algerian Basin [SOMBA]. SOMBA will be the Algerian Basin component of the integrated marine observation system of the Mediterranean Sea, and the Algerian contribution to the international effort of observation of the Mediterranean Sea which is promoted by the I-MOOSE initiative in the framework of MISTRALS. SOMBA will be coordinated with similar observation systems already running further north in the Western Mediterranean Sea, SOCIB in Spain and MOOSE in France. This project will allow i) to identify the parameters and the structure of the observing network in relation with the scientific objectives of the MERMEX project and with a monitoring of the marine environment, ii) to set up the methodologies to acquire and analyse the data with international standards and iii) to deploy instruments and to strengthen the partners’ capacities. The pilot phase of the project SOMBA which is proposed here, mainly deals with the central part of the Algerian Basin.
