PERLE cruises

The PERLE-1 / PROTEUS cruise, aboard the R/V L’Atalante, managed by SHOM and with the participation of French academic laboratories, began on November 03 and ended on November 11, 2018. Its objective was to study the preconditioning period of the formation of Levantine Intermediate Water in the eastern Mediterranean. It focused on the region in and around the Ierapetra gyre southeast of Crete.

The PERLE-2 cruise, aboard the R/V Pourquoi Pas?, began on February 21, 2019 and ended on March 22, 2019. An international team of 40 researchers (25 French researchers from LOMIC, MIO, LOV and CEFREM) and 15 foreigners (Greeks, Italians, Israelis and Americans) shared the water from more than 120 CTD profiles. Indeed, a dense network of 97 stations crossing the Crete Sea (in the Aegean Sea) and criss-crossing the Libyan Sea (in the Levantine basin) was prospected during the cruise.

The PERLE-3 cruise , aboard the R/V Pourquoi Pas?, began on March 11, 2020 and ended on March 18, 2020. It focuses on the dispersion of the Levatine Intermediate Waters and the evolution of their physical and biogeochemical characteristics, between the formation area (Levantine basin) and the northwestern basin. A network of stations covering the study area will allow to describe the physical, optical, biogeochemical and biological parameters of the water column (surface-bottom). These observations will be completed by physical and biogeochemical parameters collected by autonomous platforms (mooring line; profiling floats; gliders). Satellite data will also be used to monitor the evolution of temperature and chlorophyll concentration of surface waters over the whole study area, as well as to identify the main (sub)mesoscale structures.

Unfortunately, the cruise was interrupted after one week of work, in the middle of the Tyrrhenian Sea, for sanitary reasons (Obligation to return to the port because of the confinement related to the crisis of Covid-19).

The PERLE-4 cruise, aboard the R/V L’Atalante, began on March 27, 2021 and ended on April 26, 2021. This cruise replaced the PERLE-3 cruise that was prematurely terminated.
